Granberg began in Bjoa, a small community on the west coast of Norway, in the cellar of Paul Granberg's house. He started in the 1960s with a piece of leather brought back from America, and the first gloves were cut and stitched at home. That is an unglamorous origin, and it is worth stating plainly, because it explains a great deal about how the company still behaves. The product came first, the factory came later, and the people making the decisions have always been close to the material.
More than sixty years on, Granberg is still in business and still led by the Granberg family. Ole Marthon Granberg has led the company for around twenty five years, which is an unusually long run of continuity in the personal protective equipment trade, where brands are bought, merged and relaunched with some regularity. For a buyer, continuity is not sentiment. It means a range that develops rather than being replaced, and specifications that stay stable long enough to write into a procurement document.
The company today is international, with a worldwide client base, and it holds patented materials and products of its own. That last point matters when you are comparing quotations. EN certification is the European route. Under the European Union's PPE Regulation, a glove has to be CE marked before it can legally be placed on the market, and for the risk categories that cover industrial hand protection that means independent testing by a Notified Body. In practice this is why an EN marked glove tells you so much at a glance. The full EN 388 mechanical panel is tested and reported, so you get abrasion, cut, tear and puncture whether or not the manufacturer would have chosen to publish all four.
ANSI/ISEA ratings are what a North American compliance file needs. Where a South African site works to a group specification written in the United States, or supplies into a North American customer's chain, the ANSI cut level is the number their paperwork is built around, and a CE mark on its own will not satisfy it. Neither system is a weaker version of the other. They answer different questions, and they were written for different regulatory environments.
