Warehouse hand injuries come from volume rather than severity. Thousands of picks a shift turn small hazards, strapping ends, carton edges and pallet splinters, into a steady injury rate, and glove comfort decides whether the glove is actually worn.
Steel and plastic strapping ends, stretch wrap cutters and stapled carton flaps cause most of the lacerations in a distribution centre. They are shallow injuries but they are frequent and they take people off the floor. A light level B or C glove removes the majority of them.
Corrugated board, shrink wrap and timber pallets abrade the palm and fingertips continuously. Splinters from damaged pallets puncture as well as scratch. A coated palm with abrasion level 3 or 4 handles both without adding bulk.
Grip force is the ergonomic issue in picking work. A heavy, stiff glove increases the effort of every pick and multiplies across the shift. A thin gauge liner with a flexible foam coating lowers the grip force needed and keeps the glove on the hand.
Where operators use handheld scanners, touchscreen compatible fingertips prevent the glove being removed for every transaction.
Level B or C is usually enough. The hazards are strapping ends and carton edges rather than blades or sheet metal, and a lighter glove will be worn consistently, which matters more than the rating on paper.
Specify a glove with touchscreen compatible fingertips and a close fit. Most non compliance in distribution centres comes from gloves that make a routine step of the job harder rather than from unwillingness to wear them.
Rarely. A heavier glove increases grip effort across thousands of picks and is often replaced just as quickly because the wear point is the fingertip. Match the glove to the hazard and change frequency rather than buying thickness.
