Tactical and rescue work asks a glove to do several jobs in unpredictable order: protect the hand during forced entry or extrication, then allow fine equipment handling seconds later, in the dark and often wet.
Extrication from vehicles, forced entry, glass, torn sheet metal and edged threats all present cutting and puncturing hazards. Cut and puncture are separate positions in the EN 388 code and a strong cut letter does not guarantee puncture performance, so both need reading.
Vehicle fires, hot metal after cutting and flashover exposure are short duration but severe. Flame resistant materials in the shell and liner buy the seconds needed to withdraw the hand, and unlike ordinary synthetics they do not melt onto the skin.
Striking, breaching, rubble handling and vehicle work bring the back of the hand against hard structure. Moulded knuckle and finger protection spreads that load, and it needs to sit close enough not to shift when the hand closes.
Rope work, crawling, rubble and vehicle contact abrade the palm continuously. Reinforced palms and durable seam construction determine whether a glove survives one deployment or a season of them.
Specify by role. A breaching team and a medical responder in the same unit rarely need the same glove.
A moderate to high cut level helps with glass and torn metal during extrication, but puncture and abrasion performance matter just as much and are reported separately in the EN 388 code. Read all six positions before choosing.
With the actual equipment in service. Weapon manipulation, radio keys, torch switches, buckles and casualty handling reveal problems that a specification sheet cannot. Trial the glove with the team that will wear it.
Usually not. Breaching and vehicle work benefit from impact and abrasion protection, while medical and technical roles need thinner, more sensitive gloves. Two or three role based specifications work better than a single compromise.
